Our Story

How We Started

Little Angels Network (LAN) is an initiative that was established in 2001 by three professional Christian women. They were deeply concerned about the plight of the increasing numbers of disadvantaged children in Kenya due to HIV/AIDS, child abuse, neglect and abandonment. All these factors were joining forces to consign thousands of vulnerable Kenyan children to bleak futures. Against this backdrop, the three women took to heart the words of George Eliot the nineteenth century English novelist and Poet that, “It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses.” As such, they decided to plant roses amidst the thorns of abuse that vulnerable children were facing. LAN provided them with a garden to do so.
In April 2002, LAN was registered as a Society. Thereafter in January 2005, it was launched as a fully-fledged organisation to address critical issues concerning the welfare of children. It was now referred to as Little Angels Network Society (LANS).

LANS is founded on child protection principles as enshrined in Kenya’s Children Act, 2001. This Act resulted after more than a decade of political struggles and hard work by both public players and civil society activists. This Children Act has stood the test of time and it continues to provide legislative grounding for child welfare activism in Kenya.
Apart from introducing legal definition of a child, the Children Act 2001 created a Children’s Court and laid out a set of children’s rights with clearly defined government and citizen duties. Further to this, the Act also provided rules on adoption, foster care, institutionalization and other provisions related to guardianship of children.
Through stipulations contained in this Act, Little Angels was able to apply for and receive licensing as an adoption society in 2005. It became one of only five organizations that were granted such a license.
LANS’ founders and current leaders are all professionals and mothers who are guided by a strong belief that children’s needs could better be met in a family than in an institution. This is in line with the biblical teaching in James where it says; ‘Religion that God our father accepts as pure and faultless is this − to look after orphans and widows in their distress.’ (James 1: 27). As such, taking care of vulnerable children like orphans is a touchstone of Christianity and a moral responsibility for the society.
LANS is committed to facilitating the provision of a quality life to any child in need. It is geared towards bringing together people and community networks with positive, compassionate resolve and sensitivity to strengthen, protect, enlighten and ensure that Children rights are upheld.
LANS believes that “One life saved and changed, is one more celebrating the gift of life’. That is why our Vision clearly lays out this precepts, “a society where all children have equal chances to a dignified growth, regardless of their circumstances at birth.” Our mission provides further articulation of our Vision’s principles ‘to ensure that all vulnerable children; at risk of abandonment or neglect, have a chance to enjoy love, care and harmony in a family.’

Quote

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.
